sheep + pony: Juicy Burgers with Crispy Sweet Potato Chips

We first discovered sheep + pony on UberEats and loved it so much we had to pay a visit pronto. The physical location, near Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall, is small in both seating space and menu size — but it serves some seriously delicious burgers that taste just like ones we’d find back home. It’s also got unique imported beers and a casual, social atmosphere frequented by young foreigners. The quality food, friendly staff, and cool vibes make it an ideal expat hangout!

The restaurant is compact, with limited indoor seating at the bar, and more stools positioned at small round tables in a plastic-enclosed outdoor area. The indoor seats were all taken when we visited on a Wednesday evening, so we settled for an outdoor table in the heat. We got over it quickly thanks to the friendliness of the staff, who helped explain the menu and make recommendations.

We were also joined by a mix of locals and foreigners, who arrived on dates and in sizeable groups that occupied nearly all the seats (we imagine it could be hard to get a table on weekends). The atmosphere was very upbeat and social — one particular group of young Americans poured inside to chat with the staff (they seemed to be regulars) and order beers.

The beer list isn’t extensive, but they’ve got an interesting mix of local and imported varieties. There are standard options like the Taihu 925 Lager (the only beer on draft) and the American classic PBR Lager, as well as more unique bottles like the Anchor San Franpsycho IPA (pictured above), which we enjoyed a lot.

There are 5 different burgers on the menu, each priced at $350. They come in soft, high quality buns made by PureBread bakery. The “Spicy Chick” Fried Chicken (left) is composed of pickled cucumber, spicy ginger honey, and oozing cheese. The fried chicken was satisfyingly crispy and our mouths were burning from the healthy spice level. It was a solid choice — but the winning order was Pony’s Backyard Burger (right), composed of a thick beef patty, caramelized onion, house made garlic mayo, and more oozing cheese. This burger was DELICIOUS. It was juicy, saucy, and layered with flavour. We can’t recommend it enough.

All burgers are also served with a side of sweet potato chips, which make a nice and light accompaniment to the heavy feature. We’ve had them on two different occasions: the first time, they were crispy and irresistible, but the second time they were disappointingly stale. We aren’t sure if this was just a one-off night — we’ll have to go back and try them again to be sure.

Overall, we loved sheep + pony despite the stifling outdoor heat. It had a fun, social atmosphere, friendly staff, and delicious burgers. We can’t wait to head back soon!

Check out their short but sweet menu:

What’s the vibe?

Small, laid-back burger joint with indoor bar seating and outdoor patio tables, frequented by young foreigners. It’s got an upbeat, social atmosphere.

Worth it?

Yes! The menu is short and simple, but each item is quality. The burgers are thick, juicy, and saucy, and the sweet potato chips (when crispy) make a great side. They’re worth the $350 price tag!

Would you go back?

For sure — it’s the type of casual expat hangout you can keep coming back to.
