Little Creatures: Australian Craft Beer and Bar Food

Little Creatures is an Australian brewery that opened its gorgeous branch in Taipei last spring. Specializing in fantastic craft beers and upscale pub food, we like it for its healthy selection of drinks and upbeat, friendly atmosphere that brings the classy setting (with lots of polished brass and high ceilings) down to Earth. It’s a relaxed, relatively social spot that’s perfect for hanging out with friends for drinks, grabbing some good-quality western food, or even going on a date. They’re also one of the few places in Taipei that does a boozy brunch!

We’ve been to Little Creatures several times over the year, for dinner, drinks, and for brunch. We most recently visited for brunch, which starts at 10:30AM on the weekends and is served until 2:30PM. We’re always on the hunt for boozy brunch options, and we were excited to see that Little Creatures serves a decent selection of alcoholic beverages throughout the day. It was still early, but we started off with a mojito ($280, bottom left) and a Bloody Mary ($280, bottom right). The mojito was good, strong and not too sweet, but we weren’t the biggest fans of the Bloody Mary, which was a tad too watery for our tastes. If you’re a Bloody Mary fan, we suggest trying the ones at FuMu instead:  you’ll save yourself some money at the same time.

One thing we’ll say about having a boozy brunch at Little Creatures — and this goes for almost every boozy brunch spot in Taipei other than FuMu — is that even if they have the booze, you need to bring the party to have yourself a seriously good time. With just the two of us, it was nice to have an alcoholic drink but we recognized that it would have been a lot more fun in a big group.

As for food, the first thing we got was the smashed avo on toast ($290), served with poached eggs, coriander, and burnt lime (that was actually a lemon). The eggs were perfectly poached, with the yolks nice and runny. The rest was tasty but pretty standard as far as avocado toasts go, and we wished there’d been a hint of garlic or chilli flakes to liven it up a bit. We also went a little overboard with the lemon — which probably would have been nicer if it was lime — and overpowered the flavour a little, but still generally enjoyed it.

Next, we got the brekkie sliders ($290), which were made with pork sausage, fried egg, pineapple and rocket. These were fantastic, and we’d definitely get them again. The sausage was meaty and fragrant, and we loved the sweetness from the pineapple and addition

Food and drinks are available all throughout the day, even if you miss the cutoff for brunch and lunch. There are more than a dozen draft beers on Little Creatures’ menu (plus wines, mixed drinks, and a variety of speciality coffees). We were having trouble deciding what to pick, so we opted for the beer flight ($400) that includes 6 x 100 mL of the Little Creatures Pilsner, Bright Ale, Pale Ale, Dog Days, Rogers, and IPA. Unfortunately, they didn’t have two of these beers available on the night we visited, so they made substitutes (like the cider in place of the IPA below). The beer flight is a great option if you’re new to Little Creatures and want the chance to try a bunch of different beers, and if you have a budget to stick to you can easily share it with another person to minimize costs.

We’ve heard friends mention that their experiences with the food at Little Creatures are hit or miss, but we’ve generally liked everything we’ve ordered. The pork belly sliders ($340, top left) were great — we loved the spicy sauce on these 2 miniature sandwiches. They made a nice appetizer, though they were a bit small for the cost. We also got the sweet n’ spicy pizza ($280, top right), tasty enough to definitely prove that yes, pineapple does belong on pizza, especially when it’s joined by bacon and jalapeño. This pizza was the perfect combination of spicy and sweet, cheesy and saucy. It was our favourite order of the night. Next, we got the bowl of fries ($150, bottom left), crispy enough to be the highlight of our meal — especially when dipped in the delicious garlic aioli and harissa mayo that came included. We couldn’t get enough of those sauces! Last, we got the assorted mushroom pasta. ($290) This pasta was loaded with mushrooms and cheese and topped with parsley and a poached egg. We enjoyed it a lot and felt the price was reasonable enough.

Overall, we like the atmosphere at Little Creatures in the evenings when it gets livelier, and the food and beer are usually of good quality. Though on the slightly pricier end, we think it’s a great all-around dinner and drinking spot to add to the list, as well as a potential spot for boozy brunches if we can get a big enough group together to make it fun.

What’s the vibe?

Strikes the perfect balance between restaurant and bar, with a sleek interior and a relaxed atmosphere that’s characteristically Australian. It becomes more lively in the evening, but never rowdy.

Worth it?

We felt some of the prices were a bit steep, but overall we loved the drinks, the food, and especially the vibe.

Would you go back?

We’ve already been back!
